
NUHHCE Secretary
Craig Ford was elected National Secretary of NUHHCE/ AFSCME-AFL-CIO and Vice President of District 1199J NUHHCE/AFSCME-AFL-CIO in 2005.
Mr. Ford was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and raised in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Philadelphia Public schools. Mr. Ford continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh and after graduation enrolled in Rutgers University where he earned a Master’s degree. In addition, he has received several additional educational certifications from his continuing studies at The George Meany Center for Labor Studies, Saint Joseph’s University, New York University, Harvard University and the America Arbitration Association.
In 1992 he became an Organizer for the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees 1199/ AFSCME – AFL-CIO of New York. His first assignment was in New Jersey, the District 1199J NUHHCE/AFSCME- AFL-CIO, to organize workers in the private and public sector in the health care industry. While working out of the New Jersey office he also joined in organizing campaigns in Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Tenn., and Washington D.C. His organizing efforts across the country helped NUHHCE gain thousands of new members and enabled thousands to have union representation.
In 1994, Mr. Ford was reassigned to Philadelphia District 1199C NUHHCE, where he became an Administer Organizer in the Hospital Division. At that site he handled collective-bargaining agreements, negotiated terms and condition of the members’ working conditions, and oversaw due-process hearings involving grievances and arbitrations. In 2000, he served the State Director and Founder of the 1199/NUHHCE-AFSCME New Jersey Home Health Care Union, were he assisted in creating an affiliation between USWA Local 306- CMC and 1199/NUHHCE/AFSCME-AFL-CIO. He also authored the 2002 Proclamation of the Hudson County Ordinance “living Wage” for all health care providers.
He currently serves as Vice President of Central Labor Board Council of Bergen County, N.J., and Chairman of the Aberdeen Solomon David Scholarship Fund. Mr. Ford also is Director of 1199J Political Action Committee, the Benefit Fund, Trustee of the District 1199J Training and Development Fund, Trustee of The New Jersey Pension. He formerly served on the District 1199C Pension Fund as Trustee of the Philadelphia Legal Service Plan, Trustee of District 1199C Training & Upgrading Fund, and The Philadelphia Vicinity Health Care Fund.
Mr. Ford is a Board member of the Labor Advisory to the United Negro College Fund, member of the National Association of Securities Professionals, a Board member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Board member of the llluminati Group Investment Funds New York, a Member of Alumni Association of Rutgers University and Pittsburgh University. He is also a member of New Jersey Peace Action, New Jersey State AFL-CIO, the IUC industrial union council of New Jersey, and the CBTU of New Jersey. Furthermore, Mr. Ford serves as a member of the Jubilee Interfaith of New Jersey, Central Labor Councils of Mercer County, Passaic, West Essex, Hudson and Union, and he is a member of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute of New Jersey.
