The fund , which receives funds from members’ employers, as well as public and private grants, was written into the first 1199C contracts 36 years ago and was the brainchild of President Nicholas. Union members and members of the public are educated at the school which offers training in the health professions, GED classes and and a post-secondary degree through a partnership with Philadelphia University.

After Labor Secretary Solis and Education Secretary Duncan toured the Training Fund, they attended a forum for 200 leaders of community colleges at The Community College of Philadelphia. Here’s what Sec. Solis told the educators:

“This morning, Secretary Duncan and I toured the District 1199 C’s Training and Upgrading Fund Learning Center. Funded in part by the Department of Labor and the Department of Education, they’ve fostered a labor-management partnership to create career pathway programs in nursing, allied and behavioral health, and health information, and technology. And they’re doing it hand-in-hand with employers. Together they’ve developed customized curriculum, and flexible training programs. Not only have they accelerated learning, but they’ve created a meaningful and direct pipeline for their graduates to businesses right here in Philadelphia. And guess what: It’s working. Last year, they helped 18,990 people in many ways including certifications in health professions, career counseling, GED and other adult learning services, and much more. President Obama has called this our Sputnik moment. And just like President Kennedy challenged this country to make it to the moon, President Obama is challenging us to create jobs of the future — careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The program at 1199C is doing that.”

Secretary Duncan wrote the following:

“President Nicholas,
It was great to meet you and spend time at your training facility. Your facility and students inspired me – the sense of family and commitment to improving lives was tangible. To see your vision in action was remarkable.”

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visited the District 1199C Training and Upgrading Fund, and listened to students share their stories during a tour of classes at the school in Center City, Philadelphia.

School Superintendent Arlene Ackerman, U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah and officials from hospitals and nursing homes joined the tour as NUHHCE President Henry Nicholas and Training Fund Executive Director Cheryl Feldman guided the Secretaries and answered questions.

NUHHCE is endorsing President Barack Obama for a second term and the delegates to the Triennial Convention this past October approved the following Resolution:

Resolution Endorsing President Obama

Whereas, President Barack Obama has been an exemplary friend to organized labor and working people; and,

Whereas, President Obama has pushed through stimulus money to support working people, develop “green” energy jobs and resources, and specifically save the American auto industry; and,

Whereas, President Obama was able to push successfully to pass national healthcare reform, an issue on the agenda of decent Americans for nearly a century; and,

Whereas, President Obama has lived up to his campaign promise to set in motion the end of the unjustifiable war in Iraq; and,

Whereas, President Obama has continued fighting the war on terrorism through the capture and killings of leading Al Qaeda figures; and,

Whereas, President Obama has ended the punitive and ineffectual “No Child Left Behind” initiative and launched “Race to the Top,” the beginning of a new era and new direction in public education for the nation’s school children.

Be It Therefore Resolved That all NUHHCE districts should support President Obama’s re-election by educating and registering voters, by lobbying civic leaders and by actively campaigning.

After Hahnemann University Hospital announced plans to fire 124 Nursing Assistants - all those employed at the hospital - District 1199C members and supporters began picketing around-the-clock. The demonstrating began Tuesday, February 7, when protesters stopped traffic on Broad Street at rush hour. On Wednesday night, February 8, President Nicholas adjourned Delegates Assembly and led delegates and supporters in a candlelight vigil. Despite the snow and rain, the group marched from the union hall at 1319 Locust Street to the entrance of Hahnemann University Hospital where once again our union stopped Broad Street traffic.

District 1199C members blocked traffic as part of a day-long demonstration Friday, February 3, to protest a Thomas Jefferson University Hospital decision to subcontract maintenance services in a Jefferson building at 925 Chestnut Street. Members and staff began picketing at 7 a.m. By the end of the day, officials requested a meeting with union representatives.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is constitutional and that Congress did not overstep its power in requiring nearly all Americans to

buy health insurance.
